How are tires measured?

1) Manufacturer or Brand Name.

The manufacturer's name or brand name is displayed.


2) Determining Tire Size.

The tire size is also specified on the sidewall of the tire. This information will help you choose replacement tires for your vehicle. Here's an explanation of what the letters and numbers in tire size designation mean:


Take the tire size design below as an example. Note that these letters and numbers are provided as an example only; your tire size designation may vary depending on your vehicle.


P235/55R19 108T


P: Vehicle type designation (tires marked with the "P" prefix are intended for use in passenger cars; "LT" is for light trucks. However, such letters may not appear before the numeric sequence in a European metric tire).

235: Tire width in millimeters.

55: aspect ratio, which is the tire's height as a percentage of its width.

R: tire construction code (radial).

19: Rim diameter in inches

108: Load index, a numeric code associated with the maximum load that the tire can carry.

T: speed rating code.


Determining Wheel Size


Wheels are also distinguished by important information that you need if you have to replace one. The following explains the meaning of the letters and numbers in wheel size designation:

7.5: Rim width in inches.

J: Rim flange designation.

19: Rim diameter in inches


3) Tire Identification Number (TIN)

The manufacturing date is indicated by the last four digits in the TIN.


4) Tire construction and material

The number of plies or layers of rubber and coated fabric in the tire.


5) Maximum Allowable Inflation Pressure.

The maximum air pressure that should be placed in the tire.


6) Maximum Load Rating.

The maximum load in kilograms and pounds that the tire can carry.


7) Uniform Tire Quality Grading.

Quality ratings can be found wherever it applies on the tire sidewall between the tread shoulders and the maximum section width.
